Overview

How extrusion works, and why it matters

Extrusion pushes a heated aluminium billet through a shaped steel die, producing a long profile with a constant cross-section. Almost any shape that fits inside the press circle can be made, including hollow sections, screw ports, snap-fit joints and cooling fins. That design freedom is why extrusions appear in everything from windows to solar frames to electronics.

Because the die is the main up-front cost, extrusions become very economical in volume. For short runs and prototypes, standard catalogue profiles such as T-slot framing, angles and channels avoid tooling altogether.

Alloys

Extrusion alloys compared

AlloyStrengthBest forFinish quality
6063MediumArchitectural profiles, windows, doors, heat sinks, complex thin-walled shapesExcellent, ideal for anodising
6061Medium–highStructural and machined profiles, frames, transport partsGood
6082HighLoad-bearing sections, scaffolding, trailers, cranesGood
6005 / 6005AMedium–highSolar mounting rails, rail vehicles, large hollow sectionsGood

6063-T5 and 6063-T6 cover most architectural work; choose 6061 or 6082 when the profile carries significant load.

Profile types

Profiles we supply

T-slot framing

20, 30, 40 and 45 series modular profiles for machine guards, workstations and automation frames.

Architectural sections

Window, door, curtain wall and partition profiles with thermal break options.

Heat sinks

Finned profiles that draw heat away from LEDs, power electronics and drives.

Structural shapes

Angles, channels, I-beams, T-sections and flat bar for fabrication.

Solar profiles

Panel frames, mounting rails and clamps for photovoltaic systems.

Custom extrusions

Profiles made to your drawing, from die design through finishing and machining.

Finishing

Finishing and fabrication

  • Anodising in clear and colour, for wear and corrosion resistance
  • Powder coating in RAL colours for architectural and outdoor use
  • Precision cutting to length, drilling, tapping and CNC machining
  • Thermal break insertion for energy-efficient window and door systems
  • Protective film and profile-specific packing to prevent damage in transit

FAQ

Extrusion questions

What is the best alloy for aluminium extrusion?

6063 is the most widely extruded alloy because it flows easily through complex dies and gives an excellent surface for anodising. For load-bearing profiles, 6061 or 6082 are preferred.

What is T-slot aluminium extrusion?

A modular profile with T-shaped slots on its faces. Fasteners slide into the slots, so frames can be assembled and reconfigured without welding.

Can you make a custom extrusion to my drawing?

Yes. Send the drawing, alloy, finish and expected volume and we will advise on die cost, lead time and price per kilogram.

What is the difference between T5 and T6?

T5 is cooled straight from the press and artificially aged. T6 is fully solution heat treated before ageing, giving higher strength.

Need standard or custom extrusions?

Send us the profile, alloy, finish, length and quantity. We will reply with availability, lead time and a competitive quote.
