Overview

How aluminium brazing works

Brazing sheet is a core alloy, usually 3003 or a similar manganese alloy, clad on one or both sides with a thin layer of aluminium-silicon alloy. The cladding melts at a lower temperature than the core, flows into the joints and bonds the parts when the assembly passes through a brazing furnace. This is how radiators, condensers, evaporators and charge air coolers are made.

For arc welding, filler wire is chosen to match the base metal and the service conditions: 4043 for flowing, crack-resistant welds on 6xxx alloys, and 5356 or 5183 for stronger welds on 5xxx marine alloys.

FAQ

Brazing and welding questions

What is aluminium brazing sheet?

A core aluminium alloy clad with a lower-melting Al-Si alloy. In a brazing furnace the cladding melts and joins the parts together.

Should I use 4043 or 5356 filler wire?

4043 suits 6xxx alloys and castings and resists hot cracking. 5356 gives stronger welds and is preferred for 5xxx alloys and parts that will be anodised.
