Arc welding
TIG and MIG with Al-Mg fillers such as ER5356 or ER5183 (or the Russian Св-АМг5 / Св-АМг6 types). Clean oxide and keep heat input moderate.
1920, known by its letter name В92 (V92 or B92 in Latin script), is a Russian weldable aluminium alloy with about 4.3 % magnesium, 3.2 % zinc and 0.8 % manganese. It sits between the non-heat-treatable АМг (5xxx-type) alloys and the high-zinc 7xxx grades: it can be aged to higher strength than АМг5 or АМг6 while staying weldable. It is supplied as plate, sheet, extrusions and forgings for welded structures.

GOST 4784 lists 1920 in its table of Al-Zn-Mg alloys, together with 1901 and 1915, although in 1920 magnesium is actually the larger addition. Its magnesium level of 3.9–4.6 % is similar to 5083, while 2.9–3.6 % zinc allows a precipitation-hardening response that pure Al-Mg alloys do not have.
The result is an alloy that behaves in welding much like a 5xxx grade but can be quenched and aged for extra strength. The welded heat-affected zone, briefly heated to solution temperature, regains part of its strength by natural ageing afterwards, a property shared with other weldable Al-Zn-Mg alloys such as 7020 and 7005.
In Western systems there is no registered alloy with the same composition. Its nearest relatives in purpose are 7020 and 7005 (weldable Al-Zn-Mg) and 5083 / 5456 (high-Mg Al-Mg). A substitute must be chosen by properties, not by name.

| Element | Limit (%) | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Magnesium (Mg) | 3.9 – 4.6 | Solid-solution strength, corrosion resistance |

| Titanium (Ti) | ≤ 0.2 | Grain refiner |
| Iron (Fe) | ≤ 0.3 | Impurity |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 0.2 | Impurity |
| Copper (Cu) | ≤ 0.05 | Kept very low for weldability and corrosion |
| Beryllium (Be) | 0.0001 – 0.005 | Protects the melt from oxidation |
| Others, each / total | ≤ 0.05 / ≤ 0.1 | |
| Aluminium (Al) | Remainder | About 90 – 92 % |
GOST gives a nominal density of 2.72 g/cm³. Use it for weight: 1 m² of 10 mm plate weighs 27.2 kg.
Properties depend on product form and condition, and guaranteed values are those of the product standard or ТУ. In general terms:
TIG and MIG with Al-Mg fillers such as ER5356 or ER5183 (or the Russian Св-АМг5 / Св-АМг6 types). Clean oxide and keep heat input moderate.
Spot and seam welding of sheet are practical with proper surface preparation.
Allow natural ageing of the HAZ before final strength testing; protect weld toes from corrosive exposure.
Form in the annealed or freshly quenched condition, then age.
Machines well in aged condition with sharp tools; annealed material is softer and can smear.
Anodises satisfactorily for protection; colour may be less uniform than on 6xxx alloys.
| Alternative | When it fits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| 7020-T6 | Welded structures needing similar or higher strength | Higher zinc; follow stress-corrosion guidance |
| 7005-T53 / T6 | Extruded welded frames | Extrusion-focused; check plate availability |
| 5083-H116 / H321 | Marine and cryogenic welded structures | Lower strength; not heat-treatable |
| 5456-H116 | Higher-strength Al-Mg plate | Sensitisation above about 65 °C |
Send the original specification and target standard and we will compare composition, guaranteed properties, temper and approvals before you change material.
Yes. 1920 is the digital designation and В92 the letter designation of the same GOST alloy; in Latin script it is often written V92 or B92.
Yes. It is welded by TIG, MIG and resistance methods, using Al-Mg fillers such as 5356 or 5183, and the HAZ partly recovers strength by natural ageing.
Quenching followed by artificial ageing (Т1). For welded structures the naturally aged condition (Т) is often preferred.
There is no exact equivalent. 7020 and 7005 are the closest weldable heat-treatable alloys; 5083 and 5456 are non-heat-treatable alternatives.
