What a slug does
In impact extrusion a punch strikes a small aluminium blank, the slug, so hard that the metal flows up around the punch and forms a thin-walled can or tube in a single stroke. The quality of the slug decides the quality of the can: consistent weight, flat faces, clean edges and the right softness all reduce splits, wall variation and tool wear.
Slugs are usually annealed to full softness and surface treated, by tumbling or shot blasting, so the lubricant holds evenly during extrusion.
Slug alloys
| Alloy | Character | Typical uses |
|---|---|---|
| 1070 / 1050 | Very pure and soft; easiest to extrude | Aerosol cans, collapsible tubes, cosmetic tubes |
| 3003 | Stronger finished part | Larger containers, battery shells, housings |
| 6061 | Heat treatable for structural parts | Electronic housings, technical components |

Slug questions
Which alloy is best for aerosol can slugs?
1070 and 1050 are the standard choices because their purity makes them soft enough to extrude thin walls in one stroke.
Punched or sawn slugs?
Punched slugs are economical for thinner slugs in high volume. Sawn slugs suit thicker blanks and give a flatter face.
