Overview

Aluminium as a conductor

Aluminium conducts about 61% as well as copper by volume, but weighs roughly a third as much. For the same weight, it carries about twice the current. That is why almost all overhead power lines use aluminium, and why more and more transformers, motors and building cables use it too.

Electrical grades such as 1350 are controlled for purity to keep conductivity high. Alloyed wires such as 5154 and 5056 trade some conductivity for strength, for mesh, rivets and zippers.

FAQ

Wire questions

Is aluminium wire as good as copper?

It has lower conductivity by volume, so a larger cross-section is needed for the same current, but it is much lighter and cheaper. Correct terminations designed for aluminium are essential.

What is enamelled aluminium wire used for?

Windings in motors, transformers, ballasts and coils, where its light weight and lower cost are valuable.
