Round flat
The standard slug for backward-extruded cans, tubes and housings.
1060 aluminium slugs are annealed blanks of at least 99.6 % aluminium, sitting between 1050 and 1070 in purity and softness. They give excellent flow in impact extrusion with high conductivity for electrical and thermal parts. Metline supplies 1060 slugs punched or sawn to your diameter, thickness, shape and surface finish, with mill certification, worldwide.

The 1xxx slug grades differ mainly in purity. Each extra tenth of a per cent of aluminium makes the annealed metal slightly softer, more ductile and more conductive, and slightly more expensive.
1060 (99.6 % Al) is widely used in North America and Asia, where it is registered as A91060 and JIS A1060; in Europe the nearest common slug grades are EN AW-1050A and 1070A. In a press it behaves very close to 1050 with a marginally lower flow stress, and its slightly higher conductivity makes it a good fit for electrical housings, terminals and heat-dissipating parts.
Like all pure grades it cannot be strengthened by heat treatment. Finished impact-extruded parts gain strength from the cold work of the extrusion itself, which is why a thin wall made from a soft slug ends up noticeably harder than the slug was.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| O (annealed), typical | About 69 MPa | About 28 MPa | About 40 – 43 % | About 19 HB |

Typical values are for comparison; acceptance limits for hardness, dimensions and mass are agreed with each order and reported on the certificate.

For open-ended collapsible tubes, nozzles and parts with a through bore.
Pre-shaped faces that improve metal flow and reduce the force needed for deep parts.
For non-round cans, prismatic battery cases and rectangular housings.

Mass = π/4 × d² × t × density, for a solid round slug with no centre hole. Perforated, domed or grooved slugs weigh less; the exact slug mass is set from the volume of your finished part plus trim allowance.
| Route | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Punched from strip | Cast or rolled strip is cold rolled to thickness, slugs are blanked on high-speed presses, then annealed and finished | Thin to medium slugs in high volume: aerosol, tube and capacitor slugs |
| Sawn from rod or bar | Cast or extruded rod is sawn to length, then annealed and finished | Thick slugs, large diameters and short runs; low scrap |
The difference is small. 1060 is slightly purer, softer and more conductive; 1050 is slightly stronger and more widely used in Europe. Choose by the conductivity, strength and availability your part needs.
1060 is not a common EN slug grade; EN AW-1050A (99.5 %) or EN AW-1070A (99.7 %) is normally specified instead, depending on the ductility needed.
Yes. Pure aluminium anodises well, giving a clear, protective film; finished parts can also be lacquered or printed.
Normally fully annealed (O). A specific hardness range can be agreed for your process.
