Overview

Flat bar or cut plate?

Flat bar is extruded or rolled to its finished width and thickness, so the edges are clean and consistent and the bar is ready to use without trimming. For long, narrow parts it is usually faster and cheaper than cutting strips from plate, with less waste.

Specify flat bar by thickness × width × length, plus alloy and temper. If edges will be visible or handled, ask for radiused corners.

FAQ

Flat bar questions

Which aluminium flat bar is best for welding?

6061-T6 and 6082-T6 weld well, although the heat-affected zone loses some strength. For welded structures, design with the as-welded properties in mind.

Which flat bar is used for busbars?

High-conductivity grades such as 1350 or 6101, which balance conductivity with enough strength to handle.

Can flat bar be anodised?

Yes. 6063 gives the best anodised finish; 6061 and 6082 also anodise well.
