Drawing tube and wire: define geometry and condition together

Technical library

Drawing is a further manufacturing step, with inspection requirements distinct from the starting extrusion.

A second shaping stage

Drawing pulls material through dies to reduce or refine its section. The Aluminum Association describes drawing from rolled rod or extruded feedstock. Hydro’s tube literature describes drawn tubing for dimensional control and thin sections. This gives a useful procurement distinction: an extrusion and a drawn tube should not be treated as identical supply simply because the alloy number matches.

Define every functional dimension

For tubing, provide the outside shape, wall requirements, length and any internal dimension that matters to assembly or flow. State which features are critical and how they will be measured. Ask the producer to confirm that the proposed inspection checks the dimension the application actually needs, rather than accepting a generic catalogue tolerance without a measurement basis.

Describe the manufacturing identity

Ask whether the proposed starting tube is seamless or produced through a porthole route, and which product specification governs acceptance. Request the delivered temper and certification, then describe subsequent bending, joining or machining. A supplier’s general description of improved properties should not become a universal strength claim for every drawn alloy and wall condition.

Separate capability from qualification

A producer’s drawn-tube brochure establishes an available manufacturing category, not qualification for a medical, pressure or safety-critical use. Record the end-use requirements, requested tests and approval responsibility explicitly. The cited Hydro PDF was available as a public indexed excerpt; the complete document was not fetched. No universal draw reduction, annealing schedule or pressure rating is supplied.

Retain the tested product state

The Aluminum Association describes drawing as progressive section reduction, and Nippon Light Metal separates rod and drawn-wire uses. Keep the material state on each test record: feedstock, drawn wire and final conductor are successive products. Likewise, a tube fit needs its actual bore, wall and forming route rather than a generic precision label.
