Overview

Why aluminium foil works

Foil is a near-perfect barrier: at normal packaging gauges it blocks light, oxygen, moisture and aroma, which is why it protects food and medicines so well. It is also non-toxic, heat resistant, easy to fold and fully recyclable.

Different jobs need different foil. A pharmaceutical blister needs strength and pinhole-free quality; a food container needs stiffness for forming; a household roll needs softness and a clean finish. The alloy and temper are chosen to match.

Foil alloys and their uses

AlloyCharacterTypical uses
1235High purity, very soft, excellent for thin gaugesFlexible packaging laminates, cable wrap, tape

FAQ

Foil questions

What is the difference between 8011 and 1235 foil?

1235 is a purer, softer alloy ideal for very thin laminating foil. 8011 contains iron and silicon, which make it stronger and better for containers, closures and household rolls.

Which foil is used for pharmaceutical blisters?

8079 and 8011 in soft temper are widely used because they combine barrier properties with good formability.

How should I specify foil?

Give the alloy, temper, thickness in microns, width, core size, roll diameter or weight, and the surface finish required.
