From bauxite to alumina: understand the refinery boundary

Technical library

Ore extraction and chemical refining supply aluminium oxide, rather than finished aluminium metal.

Original process or selection outline for from bauxite to alumina: understand the refinery boundary
Original overview diagram · actual processing and acceptance depend on the specified material and application

Three different materials

Bauxite is the mined feedstock; alumina is the refined aluminium oxide; aluminium is the metal produced downstream. Hydro identifies the Bayer process as the refining step between mining and primary production. Keep these materials distinct in a supply-chain diagram: an alumina refinery is not a rolling mill, and a metal supplier may purchase rather than produce its own alumina.

Follow the material boundary

For a purchasing investigation, start with the supplied product and work upstream. Ask which casthouse supplied the billet or slab, which smelter supplied its primary metal, and whether origin documentation identifies a refinery. A statement about a company’s integrated operations does not establish the origin of every shipment. Treat answers as evidence requests rather than assumptions about the supplier’s ownership.

Separate origin and performance

A traceable upstream route can support an origin enquiry. It does not determine the component’s temper, dimensions or acceptance properties. Maintain separate records for material identity, product certification and environmental evidence so that a good result in one category cannot hide missing information in another. Compare environmental claims only after confirming their reporting boundaries and verification basis.

A useful enquiry package

Identify the finished alloy and product form, expected delivery quantity, requested origin evidence and any project-specific responsible-sourcing conditions. Ask who maintains each document and how the batch is connected to it. This overview explains the route; it does not provide refinery operating instructions, residue-management requirements or an independently verified assessment of any individual mine.

Keep refinery output distinct from metal feedstock

Hydro’s production overview places alumina before primary metal manufacture, while Hindalco’s primary offering describes billet, remelt metal and wire rod downstream. These are separate industrial stages. A product specification for a rolled sheet or casting begins much later than the refinery boundary, after metal composition and processing have been controlled.
