Different surface routes

Hydro describes anodizing as electrochemical conversion of the aluminium surface to oxide, with preparation and sealing among the process stages. Its fabrication literature also describes lacquered finishes. These options need their own acceptance descriptions: a metallic-looking anodized surface and an applied coloured coating should not be compared only by a shared colour name.

Agree appearance on real material

The anodizing brochure explains that alloy choice influences the resulting finish. Specify visible faces and request an agreed sample using the actual material and proposed preparation. For an assembly made from several lots or joined parts, ask how appearance is reviewed across all exposed components. A screen image or generic colour label is an incomplete acceptance reference.

Make functional requirements explicit

Identify mating features, electrical contacts, threads and any areas requiring masking. Agree which dimensions apply after the finish and where process contact marks may occur. Specify the service environment and cleaning expectations so the finisher can propose an appropriate system. Avoid copying a generic film-thickness table into a project without reviewing its application and governing specification.

Verify process and care

Request the finish specification, relevant inspection reports and guidance for protection during transport and installation. Ask which preparation and sealing steps form part of the approved route, and how repairs will be handled. Source descriptions establish process principles, not a universal lifetime guarantee. Coating performance, colour limits and maintenance requirements must be agreed for the particular exposure and assembly.

Specify substrate, pretreatment and finish as a system

The Anodizers Council links appearance to alloy and preparation. QUALICOAT separates coating-system approvals from inspected production-site licences. Aludium’s face-specific anodizing-quality note further shows why a generic finish name is incomplete. State the visible face, substrate, fabrication sequence and agreed inspection without attributing another producer’s approvals to the website owner.
