6061 vs 6082: comparison does not establish equivalence

Technical library

An alternative alloy must be assessed against the exact product specification and manufacturing condition.

Original process or selection outline for 6061 vs 6082: comparison does not establish equivalence
Original overview diagram · actual processing and acceptance depend on the specified material and application

Define the substitution

6082 and 6061 are both used for structural extrusions. Similar physical characteristics do not establish equivalence. Treat a change of grade as a specification decision requiring approval against the component requirements.

Check the section

The 6082 reference contains thickness-dependent extrusion values and identifies quench limitations for some thin sections. Check the actual geometry and supplied temper before using a tabulated property.

Check fabrication

Forming and welding affect the material condition. Specify how the component is manufactured and which properties must be demonstrated after fabrication.

Document acceptance

Record the source revision, property basis and the drawing revision. Confirm the standards and inspection requirements in the purchase order.

Sources and verification

Selected facts checked 14 October 2026. Source data is reference information, not certification of supplied material.

Compare the final condition rather than feedstock

The Aluminum Association distinguishes process route from final form. Keep the Hydro extrusion thickness and temper conditions attached to any 6061/6082 strength comparison. A cast billet intended for extrusion has not acquired the finished profile condition. A substitution review should therefore cover the final section, fabrication and agreed purchasing specification, not only the alloy family.
