Linear thermal expansion

Technical library

Estimate free length change for a constant expansion coefficient and a defined temperature difference.

Method and assumptions

ΔL = L × α × ΔT. Enter α in µm/(m·K). Assumes free expansion and a constant coefficient over the temperature interval; does not calculate restraint stress. Example: 1 m × 23.6 µm/(m·K) × 50 K = 1.18 mm.
