Estimate bare-metal mass from nominal geometry. Results are theoretical, not measured shipment weights.
Formula
A = 2 × flange width × t + (outside height − 2t) × t. For a prismatic section, V = A × length. Mass = V × density.
Worked example
width: 100 mm; height: 100 mm; thickness: 10 mm; length: 100 mm. At 2700 kg/m³ and one piece, the calculated mass is 0.756000 kg.
Assumptions and limits
Uniform web and flange thickness; flange width is measured from the outside of the web. Root radii and taper are excluded.
Density defaults to a rounded 6061 reference. Change it for the actual material. Read the mass-estimation guide.
