O / H111
Annealed. Standard for hot-product tanker shells and heads, which are rolled and pressed.
5454 is the strongest common 5xxx alloy that is approved for sustained service above 65 °C, which makes it the standard plate for tankers carrying hot asphalt, bitumen and heated chemicals, and for truck wheels and chassis parts. It welds well and resists corrosion like other marine-grade Al-Mg alloys. Metline supplies 5454 sheet and plate in O, H111, H32, H34 and H112 to ASTM B209 and EN 485, worldwide.

5454 contains 2.4 – 3.0 % magnesium and 0.5 – 1.0 % manganese. The magnesium is deliberately held at or below 3 %, the level above which Al-Mg alloys can become sensitised during long exposure to heat.
Sensitisation is the reason designers cannot use 5083, 5086 or 5182 for hot service: above about 65 °C, magnesium-rich β-phase precipitates along grain boundaries and the metal becomes prone to intergranular corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. 5454 stays below that magnesium threshold while using manganese to recover much of the lost strength. The result is an alloy about 20 % stronger than 5052 that can operate continuously at elevated temperature.
That property defines its markets: road tankers for hot asphalt, bitumen, molten sulphur and heated chemicals; truck and trailer wheels; chassis members and dump bodies; and pressure vessels running warm. It welds very well, with ER5554 filler designed specifically for elevated-temperature service.

Annealed. Standard for hot-product tanker shells and heads, which are rolled and pressed.
Quarter-hard, stabilised. Truck bodies, wheels and structural parts that need extra strength.
Half-hard, stabilised. Higher strength for flat panels with limited forming.

MIG and TIG. ER5554 is the matching filler for service above 65 °C; ER5356 and ER5183 contain more than 3 % Mg and are avoided in hot service.
O and H111 roll and dish well; H32 bends to about 1 – 1.5 × thickness in thin gauges.
Used for continuous service in hot tanks; check the design code for the allowable stress at operating temperature, which falls as temperature rises.
Hot-product tanks are usually insulated and clad; isolate cladding from dissimilar metals.
Fair; use sharp tools, high rake and lubricant.
Good in atmospheric and marine conditions; check compatibility with each hot cargo.

5454 is the highest-strength choice when the operating temperature rules out 5083. For cold or ambient-temperature tanks, 5083, 5182 or 5088 give thinner walls.
Its magnesium content is capped at 3 %, so it does not become sensitised during continuous service above 65 °C, as 5083 or 5182 would. It is also stronger than 5052.
ER5554 for elevated-temperature service. ER5356 can be used where the structure stays below 65 °C.
Yes, by about 20 – 30 % in equivalent tempers: typical O-temper tensile is 250 MPa against 193 MPa.
Yes. It has good seawater resistance and is useful near engines where temperatures exceed the limit for 5083.
