2014A Aerospace Aluminium Wire & Wire Rod

2014 and 2014A wire and wire rod supply high-strength, heat-treatable aluminium-copper stock in coil or straight lengths for cold heading, fastener blanks, pins and small turned parts. After solution treatment and ageing to T6, the alloy reaches about 480 MPa tensile strength. Metline supplies 2014/2014A wire in coils and cut lengths, certified to AMS, ASTM and EN standards, to fastener makers and machine shops worldwide.

Overview

What is 2014A wire rod used for?

Wire and wire rod in 2014 are the small-diameter end of the alloy's bar range. Wire rod is the coiled, hot-rolled or extruded feedstock; wire is the drawn product, sized and tempered for heading, forming or machining.

Most demand comes from fastener and screw-machine work. Blanks are cold headed in a soft or naturally aged condition, then solution treated and aged to full strength, or headed directly from T4 stock where the forming is light. Drawn wire in T6 is also fed into automatic lathes for pins, bushings and inserts that need higher strength than 6061 can offer.

Like all 2xxx alloys, 2014 needs a protective finish in service. Fasteners and pins are normally anodised or conversion-coated, and installed wet with sealant in airframe joints.

Minimum properties for 2014-T6 wire and rod under ASTM B211 and AMS 4121 are in the order of 450 MPa tensile and 380 MPa yield; the certificate reports values for your diameter and lot. Shear strength of T6 material is typically about 290 MPa, the figure fastener designers use for single-shear joints.

Tempers

Tempers for wire and wire rod

O

Annealed for maximum ductility in heavy cold heading; parts are heat-treated afterwards.

H13

A lightly drawn, controlled condition sometimes ordered as heading stock. H tempers are unusual for 2014, so agree the property limits at order.

T4

Solution treated and naturally aged; good balance of headability and strength.

T6

Fully aged for machining stock and parts that are not heavily formed.

  • Upset or heading test for heading-quality wire on request
  • Diameter and ovality checked along the coil
  • Surface inspection for seams and laps that would split during heading
  • EN 10204 3.1 certificate with full traceability
Applications

Applications

  • Special fasteners, pins and studs for aircraft and defence hardware
  • Screw-machine parts such as inserts, bushings and spacers
  • Cold-headed blanks heat-treated after forming
  • Small high-strength spring clips and formed parts aged after forming

For standard aerospace solid rivets, 2117 (AD), 2017 (D) and 2024 (DD) are the usual alloys; 2014 wire is chosen for special parts where its higher yield strength helps.

FAQ

2014A aluminium (aluminum) wire: FAQ

Can 2014 wire be cold headed?

Yes, in O or T4 temper. Severe heads are formed in O and the parts are solution treated and aged afterwards.

Is 2014 used for standard aircraft rivets?

Not usually. Standard solid rivets use 2117, 2017 or 2024. 2014 wire is used for special fasteners and turned parts.

What is the strength of 2014-T6 wire?

Typical tensile strength is about 483 MPa and yield about 414 MPa, with shear strength around 290 MPa.

What packing do you use?

Coils are strapped, wrapped against moisture and palletised or cased; straight lengths are bundled and boxed.

Which certificate is supplied?

An EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate with chemistry and mechanical results for the lot.
