1370 Aluminium Wire Rod for Electrical Use

1370 wire rod is a higher-purity electrical aluminium (at least 99.70 % Al, EN AW-1370 / EAl99.7) that conducts slightly better than 1350 and draws to fine sizes with fewer breaks. It is chosen for winding wire, magnet wire, fine stranded conductors and other products where a fraction of a percent more conductivity, or better drawability, pays for the purer metal.

Overview

1370 or 1350: what is the difference?

Both grades are electrical-conductor aluminium with controlled titanium, vanadium, chromium and manganese, and both use boron to tie up the residual transition metals. The difference is purity. 1370 requires 99.70 % aluminium and caps iron at 0.25 % and copper at 0.02 %, against 0.40 % and 0.05 % for 1350.

Lower iron and copper mean a little more conductivity and fewer hard intermetallic particles. In practice the conductivity gain is modest, typically a few tenths of a percentage point of IACS, but the cleaner structure helps when rod is drawn to very fine diameters or flattened into rectangular winding conductor, where particles trigger breaks and surface defects.

The price premium for 1370 depends on the cost of higher-purity primary metal. For standard overhead conductor and power cable, 1350 remains the economical choice; 1370 earns its place in winding wire, fine wire and premium low-loss products.

Tempers

Rod tempers and how to choose

Rod temper is set by the rolling temperature and the cooling of the rod at the end of the mill. Tempers run from fully annealed O through the strain-hardened H11 to H16 classes. EN 1715-2 and national standards give tensile ranges and minimum conductivities for each class; the ranges are of the same order as those for 1350 rod (roughly 80–150 MPa from H11 to H16).

O / H11

Softest rod. Best for fine wire, magnet wire and flattening into rectangular winding conductor, and gives the highest finished conductivity.

H12 / H13

General-purpose drawing rod for insulated cable and medium-fine wire.

H14 / H16

Harder rod for wire that must reach high tensile strength after drawing, such as conductor strands.

Ask for the guaranteed tensile range and minimum conductivity of the class you order to be shown on the certificate.

Applications

Where 1370 rod is used

  • Transformer and motor windings: round and rectangular enamelled or paper-covered wire
  • Magnet wire: fine enamelled wire for coils, chokes and solenoids
  • Fine and flexible conductors: multi-wire strands that need many drawing passes
  • Low-loss power conductors: where specification calls for maximum conductivity
  • Strip and tape: rod rolled flat for transformer foil leads and shielding
Processing

Drawing and annealing tips

  1. Match rod to lineAgree temper class with the drawing-machine supplier; soft rod on fine-wire lines reduces breaks.
  2. Keep it cleanStore rod dry and covered; oxide and dirt on the surface carry into the dies.
  3. Lubricate and coolUse emulsion or oil suited to aluminium and keep dies polished.
  4. Anneal for windingsContinuous or batch annealing restores ductility and conductivity in winding wire before enamelling.
  5. Test finished wireMeasure resistivity, elongation and spring-back on the finished size.

FAQ

1370 aluminium (aluminum) wire rod: frequently asked questions

Is 1370 more conductive than 1350?

Slightly. Both are about 62 % IACS; 1370 is typically a few tenths of a percentage point higher because iron and copper are lower.

Why choose 1370 rod if the conductivity gain is small?

Because it is cleaner. Fewer intermetallic particles mean fewer breaks when drawing fine wire and better surface on flattened winding conductor.

Which standard covers 1370 wire rod?

EN 1715-2 in Europe and GOST 13843 in the CIS. ASTM B233 covers only 1350, so 1370 is otherwise ordered by agreement on chemistry, temper and conductivity.

What is the Russian equivalent of 1370?

АД00Е (digital 1010Е) in GOST 4784, with 99.70 % minimum aluminium.

What sizes are available?

Mainly 9.5 mm, with 7.6 to 24 mm available, in coils with mill test certificates.
