Loading and discharge pipework
Bottom-loading lines, manifolds and discharge pipes between the compartment valves and the couplers. Tube is bent, flanged or welded to fittings.
On aluminium road tankers the shell is built from 5xxx plate, but much of the equipment around it, including loading pipework, walkway handrails, ladders, frames and supports, is made from 6061-T6 tube. 6061 gives about 40 % more yield strength than common 5xxx tube alloys, welds to the shell, resists fuel and weather, and keeps the tare weight down. This guide covers where 6061 tube is used on a tanker, the properties to specify and what to check when buying.

Aluminium tankers carry more product than steel tankers of the same gross weight, because every kilogram saved in the vehicle is a kilogram of payload. The shell and baffles are typically 5083, 5182, 5454 or 5754 plate, chosen for weldability and toughness. Around the shell, builders need stiffer, stronger sections, and 6061-T6 tube fills that role.
6061-T6 has a minimum yield strength of 240 MPa in extruded tube, roughly 40 % higher than annealed 5xxx tube. It machines well for threaded and flanged pipe ends, takes anodising or paint, and resists petrol, diesel, kerosene and the outdoor environment. It is also widely available in round, square and rectangular tube, so the same alloy can be used for piping, guarding and structure.

Lightweight return lines running along the tank to the vapour coupler.
Round tube for rails and posts on the tank top, where low weight helps with folding mechanisms.
Rear and side access ladders made from tube or tube-and-profile assemblies, often anodised.
Square and rectangular tube for hose trays, valve cabinets, bumper frames and equipment supports.
Structural guards around manhole covers and top fittings, designed to the applicable tank code.

Minimums for extruded tube to ASTM B221 and EN 755-2; seamless pipe to ASTM B241 has the same T6 minimums.
Fittings and brackets are often welded directly to the shell, which means joining 6061 to 5xxx plate. ER5356 or ER5183 filler is the usual choice for these mixed joints, because silicon-rich ER4043 can form brittle magnesium silicide when diluted with high-magnesium base metal. Welding drops the 6061 heat-affected zone to roughly T4 strength, so brackets and guards are sized for welded properties.
Aluminium is often described as "non-sparking", but this needs care. Aluminium smeared onto rusty steel and then struck can produce an incendiary (thermite) spark. Keep aluminium tools and fittings away from rusty steel impacts in hazardous zones. All pipework must be electrically bonded and earthed to the tank to dissipate static charge during loading.
For corrosion, 6061 resists fuels and the atmosphere well. Isolate it from steel bolts and chassis members with insulating washers or coatings, and rinse off road salt regularly. Anodising or paint adds protection on rails and ladders.
Usually not. Shells are built from 5xxx plate such as 5083, 5182, 5454 or 5754, which keeps full strength after welding. 6061 is used for pipework, rails, ladders and frames.
ER5356 or ER5183. ER4043 is avoided on high-magnesium base metal because it can form brittle phases in the weld.
Not unconditionally. Aluminium striking rusty steel can create a thermite spark, so keep impacts away from hazardous zones and bond all pipework to earth.
T6 for straight pipe and structure. Order T4 if pipes need tight bends, then use as-is or age after bending.
Yes. Tube can be supplied cut to length, mill finish or anodised, with mill test certificates and export packing.
