1035 Aluminium Wire Rod for Rivets
1035 is a commercially pure aluminium grade with at least 99.35 % aluminium, sitting between 1100 and 1050 in purity. As rivet wire it is supplied in H14 or H18 temper, roughly 1.6 to 10 mm in diameter, for solid and blind rivets that need easy heading and good corrosion resistance rather than high strength. This guide covers its composition, properties, quality checks and how to order it.

What is 1035 aluminium rivet wire?
1035 is a registered 1xxx-series grade: the "35" means a minimum of 99.35 % aluminium. It allows a little more iron and silicon than 1050 or 1060, which makes it cheaper to produce, but it is purer and softer than 1100. That combination gives a wire that heads very easily and costs less than higher-purity grades.
Rivet makers use 1035 for light-duty solid rivets, tubular and semi-tubular rivets and the bodies of blind (pop) rivets. In each case the wire is cut to a slug and cold-headed, often at several hundred parts per minute. The grade is used widely in Asian and European rivet production and appears in national rivet-wire standards; buyers in North America would normally specify 1100 under ASTM B316 for the same job.
Because the alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment, its strength comes only from cold drawing. The temper you order (half-hard H14 or full-hard H18) therefore sets both how easily the wire heads and how strong the finished rivet is.
1035 chemical composition (wt %)
| Element | Maximum | Why it is limited |
|---|---|---|
| Silicon (Si) | 0.35 | Higher silicon reduces ductility at the rivet head |
| Iron (Fe) | 0.60 | Main impurity; forms hard particles that can start head cracks |
| Copper (Cu) | 0.10 | Small amounts add strength but reduce corrosion resistance |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.05 | Impurity |
| Magnesium (Mg) | 0.05 | Impurity |
| Zinc (Zn) | 0.10 | Impurity |
| Vanadium (V) | 0.05 | Impurity; lowers conductivity |
| Titanium (Ti) | 0.03 | Grain refiner, kept low |
| Others, each | 0.03 | |
| Aluminium (Al) | ≥ 99.35 | Remainder |
Limits per the Aluminum Association registration of 1035, matching the values used in EN and other national standards for this grade.

Mechanical and riveting performance
Shear strength is the property that matters for a rivet in service. For 1035 in H14 temper, rivet-wire standards commonly require a minimum shear strength of about 60 MPa, measured on wire samples by a double-shear test of the type described in ASTM B565. Typical tensile strength in H14 is roughly 100 – 135 MPa, and in the soft O temper about 60 – 95 MPa with high elongation.
| Property | 1035-O | 1035-H14 | 1035-H18 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength (approx.) | 60 – 95 MPa | 100 – 135 MPa | ≥ 125 MPa |
| Shear strength | ≈ 50 MPa | ≥ 60 MPa (typical spec) | Higher, but heads less easily |
| Heading behaviour | Excellent | Very good | Limited: small heads only |
| Density | 2.71 g/cm³ | 2.71 g/cm³ | 2.71 g/cm³ |
| Electrical conductivity | About 60 – 61 % IACS | About 60 % IACS | About 59 – 60 % IACS |
Approximate ranges for guidance; the governing standard and mill certificate define the guaranteed values for each lot.
A heading test checks riveting performance directly: a sample is upset until its height is a set fraction of its diameter, and the bulged surface must be free of cracks. It is the best way to compare wire from different sources before you commit to a production run.
Surface quality and inspection
Surface defects on rivet wire become cracks in the rivet head, so the surface standard is strict. A typical acceptance scheme is:
| Defect | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Cracks, laps, seams, peeling, blisters, inclusions pressed into the surface, corrosion | Not permitted |
| Light scratches, scuffs or dents | Permitted only if their depth is no more than half the minus diameter tolerance |
| Light oil or drawing lubricant | Permitted |
- Diameter and ovality measured at both ends of each coil, and more often for automatic headers
- Tensile and shear testing per lot, reported on an EN 10204 3.1 certificate with chemical analysis
- Visual inspection of the coil surface and winding, so wire pays off without tangling
1035 compared with 1050A, 1100 and 5056 rivet wire
| Grade | Purity / type | Rivet strength | Heading | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1035 | 99.35 % Al | Low | Excellent | Economical light-duty rivets |
| 1050A / 1060 | 99.5 – 99.6 % Al | Low | Excellent | Rivets needing better conductivity or surface |
| 1100 | 99.0 % Al + Cu | Low–moderate | Excellent | ASTM B316 rivets, code "A" |
| 3003 / 3A21 | Al-Mn | Moderate | Very good | Stronger general rivets |
| 5056 / 5052 | Al-Mg | Moderate–high | Good | Rivets for magnesium and marine assemblies |
| 2117 / 2017 | Al-Cu, heat-treatable | High | Good after treatment | Structural and aerospace rivets |
If a joint fails in shear with 1035 rivets, move up to 3003 or 5056 before going to heat-treatable 2xxx grades, which need solution treatment and careful timing between quenching and driving.
Typical uses of 1035 rivet wire
- Blind rivet bodies for furniture, appliances, ducting and light enclosures
- Solid and semi-tubular rivets for luggage, signs, electrical boxes and HVAC components
- Rivets joining aluminium sheet in building products, where an aluminium fastener avoids galvanic corrosion
- Nails, pins and small cold-formed parts
Packing and how to order
Coils are wrapped in moisture-resistant film or fibre cloth, then packed either in wooden cases or "eye-to-sky" on pallets (coil axis vertical), which keeps the coil shape stable and makes handling with a forklift easy. Desiccant is added for sea freight.

1035 rivet wire: frequently asked questions
What is 1035 aluminium?
A commercially pure aluminium grade with at least 99.35 % aluminium. It is slightly purer than 1100 and slightly less pure than 1050, and is used mainly for rivet wire, foil and general sheet.
Which temper of 1035 should I use for rivets?
H14 for most solid rivets from about 3 mm diameter, and H18 for fine wire around 1.6 – 3 mm. Ask for O temper if your heads are large or the rivet is tubular.
How strong is a 1035 rivet?
In H14 temper, rivet-wire standards commonly specify a minimum shear strength of about 60 MPa. That suits light-duty joints; use 5056 or a heat-treatable grade for structural loads.
What is the nearest ASTM (aluminum) equivalent to 1035 rivet wire?
ASTM B316 does not list 1035; 1100 is the closest grade in that specification and behaves very similarly in heading.
How is 1035 rivet wire packed for export?
In fibre-cloth or film-wrapped coils, packed in wooden cases or on eye-to-sky pallets with desiccant, so the wire arrives dry and undamaged.
