АВД1-1 Aluminium Alloy (GOST 1131-76)

АВД1-1 is a Russian aluminium-copper-magnesium-manganese alloy supplied as pig ingot under GOST 1131-76, the standard for wrought aluminium alloys in pigs. It is remelted to cast billets and slabs for rolling, extrusion and forging, and it can be used to adjust the composition of other alloy melts. This guide explains its composition, where it sits among duralumin-type alloys and what buyers outside the GOST system should know.

Overview

What is АВД1-1?

GOST 1131-76 covers aluminium alloys delivered as pigs (чушки) for two purposes: making ingots that will be processed by pressure (rolling, extrusion, forging, drawing) and adding to the charge when other alloys are melted. АВД1 and its tighter variant АВД1-1 are the Al-Cu-Mg-Mn grades in that standard. The letters indicate an aluminium alloy for wrought (deformable) products, and the suffix "-1" marks the narrower composition window.

Unlike a sheet or bar specification, GOST 1131 does not set mechanical properties. It controls chemistry and the shape, mass and marking of the pigs. The properties of the final product come from the wrought standard it is processed to and from the heat treatment applied, so a page that quotes a tensile strength "for АВД1-1" is really quoting a property of some finished product made from it.

In practice, АВД1-1 is a pre-alloyed feedstock. A rolling or extrusion plant can melt it directly, top it up with other alloys or primary aluminium to reach a target such as a Д-series duralumin, or use it to correct copper, magnesium and manganese in a melt made largely from scrap.

Chemical composition

АВД1-1 chemical composition (GOST 1131-76)

The limits below are from Table 1 of GOST 1131-76. АВД1 is shown for comparison: it has much wider copper, magnesium and manganese ranges and a higher zinc allowance.

Element (%)АВД1-1АВД1
Copper (Cu)2.5 – 3.52.5 – 5.0
Magnesium (Mg)0.2 – 0.70.1 – 1.0
Manganese (Mn)0.1 – 0.70.1 – 1.0
Iron (Fe), max0.80.8
Silicon (Si), max0.80.8
Zinc (Zn), max0.30.5
Nickel (Ni), max0.10.1
Other impurities, each / total0.05 / 0.20.05 / 0.2

Iron and silicon limits of 0.8 % are generous compared with aerospace wrought alloys. If the remelted metal must meet a tighter specification, check the actual analysis on the certificate and dilute with primary aluminium if needed.

Comparison

How АВД1-1 compares with duralumin-type alloys

Copper at 2.5 – 3.5 % with modest magnesium places АВД1-1 between the rivet alloys and the classic duralumins. It is not identical to any wrought grade, which is consistent with its role as feedstock.

AlloyCu (%)Mg (%)Mn (%)Character
АВД1-1 (GOST 1131)2.5 – 3.50.2 – 0.70.1 – 0.7Pig alloy for remelting and charge correction
Д18 / 21172.2 – 3.00.2 – 0.5≤ 0.2Rivet wire alloy, good cold heading
Д1 / 20173.5 – 4.5 (2017)0.4 – 0.80.4 – 1.0Original duralumin, bars and forgings
Д16 / 20243.8 – 4.91.2 – 1.80.3 – 0.9High-strength sheet, plate and extrusions

For Western buyers this means there is no direct EN or AA equivalent to АВД1-1 as a product. If what you really need is a wrought Al-Cu-Mg product made from it, specify the wrought alloy and standard instead, for example 2017A bar to EN 573-3 and EN 755-2, or 2117 rivet wire, and the producer will select the charge accordingly.

Supply

Pig format and downstream product forms

Supply under GOST 1131-76

Form
Pigs (чушки) of standard shapes; sizes in the standard serve as reference for moulds
Mass
From small pigs of about 5 kg up to large blocks of well over a tonne
Marking
Grade and melt number on each pig or bundle, with colour marking per the standard
Documents
Certificate with melt analysis for each lot

After remelting and casting into billet or slab, Al-Cu-Mg alloys of this family are processed into sheet and strip, plate, bar and rod, wire, extruded profiles and forgings. Those products are then supplied to their own GOST standards (for example GOST 21631 for sheet, GOST 21488 for bar, GOST 8617 for profiles) in annealed (М), quenched and naturally aged (Т) or artificially aged (Т1) conditions.

Applications

Where АВД1-1 is used

  • Remelt stock for wrought products: billets and slabs for extrusion, rolling, drawing and forging of Al-Cu-Mg semi-finished products.
  • Charge correction (подшихтовка): adjusting copper, magnesium and manganese in melts made from primary metal or scrap, so the target alloy is reached with fewer additions.
  • Production under GOST documentation: plants and repair facilities that must trace materials to Russian standards.
  • Downstream parts: through its wrought products, moderately stressed structural parts, fittings, fasteners and machined components in transport and machinery.

Like all 2xxx-type alloys, products made from it have only moderate corrosion resistance and need anodising, cladding or paint in aggressive environments, and they are not normally fusion-welded for structural joints.

Practical advice

Buying and specification advice

  1. State the standardQuote GOST 1131-76 and the grade АВД1-1 explicitly; АВД1 has wider limits and is not interchangeable.
  2. Agree the analysisAsk for the melt analysis before shipment if your target alloy has tighter iron, silicon or zinc limits.
  3. Consider substitutesIf GOST documentation is not mandatory, ordering the final wrought alloy (2017A, 2117, 2024) is usually simpler.
  4. Define documentsCertificate type (for example EN 10204 3.1), marking and packing requirements for export.

FAQ

АВД1-1 aluminium (aluminum) alloy: frequently asked questions

What standard covers АВД1-1?

GOST 1131-76, which specifies wrought aluminium alloys supplied as pigs for making ingots for pressure processing and for charge additions.

What is the difference between АВД1 and АВД1-1?

АВД1-1 has narrower limits: 2.5 – 3.5 % copper, 0.2 – 0.7 % magnesium, 0.1 – 0.7 % manganese and 0.3 % maximum zinc, against 2.5 – 5.0 % Cu, 0.1 – 1.0 % Mg and Mn and 0.5 % Zn for АВД1.

What are the mechanical properties of АВД1-1?

GOST 1131 does not specify any, because the alloy is supplied as remelt pigs. Properties belong to the wrought product made from it and are set by that product's standard and temper.

Is there a Western equivalent?

Not as a product. Its chemistry lies between 2117 and 2017. If you need a finished wrought product, specify the EN or AA alloy directly.

Can Metline supply АВД1-1?

We review GOST enquiries case by case and supply Al-Cu-Mg wrought products such as 2017, 2024 and 2117 to international standards, with mill certificates and export packing.
