Thermal insulation
Facing for mineral wool, foam and pipe insulation; reflects radiant heat and acts as a vapour barrier. A core GOST 618 use.
1145 is a commercially pure aluminium with at least 99.45 % Al, rolled into thin foil for insulation, packaging, cable screening and battery current collectors. In Russia and the CIS, technical foil is ordered to GOST 618 and packaging foil to GOST 745, so buyers there often specify "1145 foil to GOST". This guide covers the chemistry, tempers, gauges, marking and the points to agree before ordering.

1145 is an Aluminum Association / ISO designation for unalloyed aluminium with a minimum purity of 99.45 %. Iron and silicon are the main residual elements and are limited together to 0.55 %, which keeps the metal soft, ductile and highly conductive. Those qualities make it one of the standard alloys for converter foil, in the same family as 1235 and 1050.
The two Russian standards serve different markets. GOST 618 covers rolled foil for thermal, damp-proof and sound insulation and other technical purposes; it explicitly excludes capacitor foil. GOST 745 covers foil for packaging, including food, pharmaceutical and confectionery wraps. A purchase order that says only "GOST" is therefore incomplete: it must name the right standard, the temper and the dimensions.
In practice 1145 foil is also bought to international specifications such as ASTM B479 (annealed and hard foil for flexible barrier, packaging and insulation) and EN 546. Many mills certify the same foil to more than one standard, which helps exporters who supply both CIS and other markets.
GOST 618-2014 has been reported as superseded by a 2025 edition. If your contract cites a specific edition, state it on the order; otherwise we certify to the edition current at the time of supply.
Registered limits for 1145, as published by the Aluminum Association and EN 573-3. Single values are maximums.
| Element | Limit (%) |
|---|---|
| Silicon + iron (Si + Fe) | ≤ 0.55 |
| Copper (Cu) | ≤ 0.05 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 0.05 |
| Magnesium (Mg) | ≤ 0.05 |
| Zinc (Zn) | ≤ 0.05 |
| Vanadium (V) | ≤ 0.05 |
| Titanium (Ti) | ≤ 0.03 |
| Others, each | ≤ 0.03 |
| Aluminium (Al) | ≥ 99.45 |
A common error in supplier tables is to show iron at 0.05 % maximum. For 1145 the limit is on the sum of silicon and iron; typical foil stock has iron in the 0.3–0.4 % range, which helps strength and pinhole performance at thin gauges.
Foil properties depend strongly on gauge and temper. Soft (O, Russian М) foil is fully annealed and dry, ideal for wrapping, laminating and deep forming. Hard (H18 / H19, Russian Т) foil is as-rolled, much stronger and stiffer, and used where the foil must hold its shape or survive coating lines, such as battery electrodes.
| Property | Soft foil (O / М) | Hard foil (H18–H19 / Т) |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength | Low; roughly 60–100 MPa depending on gauge | High; roughly 150 MPa and above |
| Elongation | Higher, rising with thickness (a few % at 7–9 µm) | Low, typically 1–3 % |
| Surface | Clean, degreased by annealing; wettable for lacquer and adhesive | Rolling oil residue unless washed or corona treated |
| Main uses | Packaging, insulation laminates, cable screening | Battery current collectors, fin stock, lidding backing |
Ranges are indicative. Guaranteed tensile and elongation values are set by the order standard for each gauge and are reported on the test certificate.
Foil weight is 2.70 g per m² for each micrometre of thickness. Converters also think in yield, the area per kilogram:
| Thickness (mm) | g per m² | m² per kg |

| 0.009 | 0.0 | 41152.3 |

| 0.015 | 0.0 | 24691.4 |
| 0.02 | 0.1 | 18518.5 |
| 0.03 | 0.1 | 12345.7 |
| 0.04 | 0.1 | 9259.3 |
| 0.05 | 0.1 | 7407.4 |
| 0.08 | 0.2 | 4629.6 |

Russian foil designations list the product, thickness × width, grade and standard. For example, Фольга 1145 Т 0,05 × 460 ГОСТ 618 would describe hard 1145 foil, 0.05 mm thick and 460 mm wide, to GOST 618. Confirm the exact format with your customer, because some contracts also require the temper letter and roll weight in the description.
Facing for mineral wool, foam and pipe insulation; reflects radiant heat and acts as a vapour barrier. A core GOST 618 use.
Laminated with paper, film or bitumen for moisture barriers in building envelopes.
Laminated foil tapes for electromagnetic screening of power and data cables.
Soft foil for confectionery, dairy lids, blister lidding laminates and pouches, ordered to GOST 745 or food-contact rules.
Hard 1145 foil around 12–20 µm carries the cathode coating in lithium-ion cells; specified to battery-grade tolerances rather than GOST 618.
High-purity foil is used, but capacitor foil is outside GOST 618 and needs its own specification and purity.
GOST 618 covers technical foil for insulation, damp-proofing and similar uses; GOST 745 covers packaging foil. Capacitor foil is excluded from GOST 618 and needs its own specification.
At least 99.45 % aluminium, with silicon plus iron limited to 0.55 % and other elements at 0.05 % or less each.
They are very close. 1235 requires 99.35 % Al minimum and allows Si + Fe up to 0.65 %, so 1145 is slightly purer. Both are standard converter foils and are often interchangeable after approval.
Yes. Hard 1145 foil is a common cathode current collector, but it must be ordered to battery specifications for thickness tolerance, tensile strength, surface cleanliness and pinholes.
Typically 0.007 to 0.20 mm, in soft or hard temper, slit to width on cores to suit your equipment.
