Residential patios
Open the roof for sun in winter and close it for shade and rain cover in summer.
A retractable louvered roof pergola has aluminium blades that rotate like a standard louvered roof and can also slide back and stack at one end, leaving the roof completely open to the sky. It gives the widest range of control: full sun, filtered shade, ventilation or a closed, rain-shedding roof. Metline supplies profiles and blade sections for retractable and rotating louvered pergolas to pergola makers for homes, hospitality and commercial projects worldwide.

In a rotating louvered roof, each blade pivots in place: the roof can be opened to about 90° or more, but the blades always remain overhead. In a retractable louvered roof the blades are carried on trolleys in the side beams. A motor first rotates them, then draws them along the beams so they stack tightly at one end. The result is an open frame with nearly the whole area exposed to sky.
When closed, the blades lie flat and interlock, with a gutter edge on each blade that carries rain sideways into the perimeter beams and down inside the posts. Because the mechanism is more complex than a simple rotating roof, retractable systems are almost always motorised and are usually paired with rain and wind sensors that close or open the roof automatically.
| Roof type | How it opens | Rain cover | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rotating louvered roof | Blades pivot 0 – 90° or more in place | Yes, when closed | Most residential and hospitality terraces |
| Rotating and retractable louvered roof | Blades rotate, then slide and stack at one end | Yes, when closed | Open-sky use, restaurants, premium homes |
| Sliding solid roof | Rigid panels slide over each other | Yes, when closed | Semi-covered lounges and terraces |
| Retractable fabric canopy | Fabric folds or rolls back on guides | Limited; light rain only with waterproof fabric | Light-duty and seasonal shade |
A hardtop louvered roof gazebo is a freestanding alternative with a fixed decorative roof, and an aluminium sunshade system suits façades where only solar control is needed.

Weather-proof outdoor dining and lounge areas that can open to the stars at night.
Keeps outdoor covers in use in changing weather, with lighting and heaters built in.
Joined modules over large spaces, operated centrally with sensors.
A louvered pergola's blades only rotate, so they stay overhead even when fully open. A retractable louvered roof rotates the blades and then slides them back to stack at one end, opening almost the whole roof to the sky.
When closed, the interlocking blades shed rain into gutters in the beams and down through the posts, keeping the area dry in normal rain. Wind-driven rain can still enter from the sides unless screens or glass are fitted.
Rotating-only roofs are often available with a manual crank. Retractable roofs are almost always motorised, because sliding and stacking the blades needs a powered drive, usually with remote control and optional rain and wind sensors.
Follow the system's published ratings. Many owners retract or open the roof before heavy snow, and a wind sensor can open the blades or stop the roof moving in storms to reduce load on the structure.
Clean blades, tracks and gutters regularly, keep post outlets clear, and have the drive, trolleys and seals checked once a year. Rinse more often in coastal areas.
